Around 12:30 am on June 5, 2011, CeCe was walking to the grocery store with some friends, all of them young, African American, and LGBTIQ or allied. As they passed a local bar, the Schooner Tavern, a group of older, white people who were standing outside the bar’s side door began hurling racist and transphobic slurs at them, without provocation. They called CeCe and her friends ‘faggots,’ ‘niggers,’ and ‘chicks with dicks,’ and suggested that CeCe was ‘dressed as a woman’ in order to ‘rape’ Dean Schmitz, one of the attackers. When CeCe approached the group and told them that her crew would not tolerate hate speech, one of the women said, “I’ll take you bitches on,” and then smashed her glass into CeCe’s face. She punctured CeCe’s cheek all the way through, lacerating her salivary gland. A fight ensued, during which one of the attackers, Dean Schmitz, was fatally stabbed.

The only person arrested that night was CeCe. She was briefly taken to the hospital where she received 11 stitches in her cheek. While she was still suffering both physically and mentally from this traumatic incident, she was left alone in a room for three hours and then interrogated, and then placed in solitary confinement at the Hennepin County men’s jail. She spent the next several months in jail and had to wait almost two months between her initial doctors’ visit and a much-needed follow-up appointment.

After her arrest, CeCe was quickly charged with second-degree murder. In short, she was prosecuted for surviving a violent, racist, transphobic attack.

A beach for everyone: physically handicapped individuals took part in the “Praia para Todos” (Beach for Everyone) project on Copacabana beach in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil last week.

The project, run by volunteer physical therapists and students, offers a weekend at two of Rio’s beaches to the physically handicapped, many of whom don’t have the means to reach the beach, let alone swim in the sea.

Despite Republicans abusing the filibuster at arecord pace, the attempt by Democratic Sens. Jeff Merkley, Tom Udall and Tom Harkin to reform the procedure and thus end the obstructionism was thwarted by their own majority leader, Harry Reid. For which the Republicans very quickly demonstrated their gratitude by continuing to abuse the filibuster.

In March, Senate Majority WhipDick Durbinsaid filibuster reform should be reopened, and less than two weeks ago, Reid himselfthreatenedto do exactly that. But does anyonebelievehe is serious? It’s time for him to prove it. It’s past time.

Despite overwhelming support, across the nation, the Republicans and a handful of complicit Democrats just killed a proposed new federal background check law. Other widely supported gun safety measures also will be filibustered away. It’s time for Sen. Reid to lead or get out of the way and let someone else do it. Harry Reid must reform the filibuster or resign or be replaced as Majority Leader. It’s time for the Democratic leader in the Senate to be a leader.

I am in complete agreement with Laurence lewis, who wrote this. It’s why I created WE TOLD YOU SO HARRY, because we have got to do something to fix how broken and dysfunctional the Senate has become.

Yes, the system is broken but filibuster reform would go a looooong way toward fixing all the shit that’s been laying around busted while the GOPeabrains try to legislate vagina control and protect a criminal’s right to buy a gun at a gun show without the nuisance of a background check.
